Darkhan (city)

Darkhan (Mongolian Дархан ) is the third largest city in Mongolia and the capital of Darkhan Uul Aimag ( Mongolian province). The name means "blacksmith" and was chosen to indicate the intended purpose of the city.

History

The foundation stone of the city was laid on 17 October 1961. It was designed as an industrial location to cover the production for the northern Mongolia as part of the socialist planned economy. The construction was carried out with massive support by the Soviet Union.

Population

76 % of the population of the Aimag live in the city, most of them in prefabricated housing, the rest in yurt camps. The share of Russian-born population is higher than in other cities of Mongolia.

Traffic

The Trans-Mongolian Railway stops in Darkhan. Of particular importance, the side line is to Erdenet, which transports the copper mined there.

Parallel to the railway runs the important road connection from Ulan Bator to Sükhbaatar on the Russian border over here.

Culture

An old wooden house in the center houses the Charagiin Monastery, whose operation was resumed after democratization.

The Museum of Traditional Folk Art houses a collection of archaeological artifacts, traditional clothing and ritual objects.
