Darmstadt (region)

The Region of Darmstadt is one of the three administrative districts of Hesse. It lies in the south of the country and forms the Planning Region Southern Hesse. More than half of the Hessian population lives here.

Administrative divisions

The Region of Darmstadt is legally dependent unincorporated. The authority of the government district, the Darmstadt Regional Council, is the general state administration authority of the State of Hesse in middle school ( § 1 para 1 Intermediate Act). History

The Region of Darmstadt was in formation of United - Hesse built in 1945 as one of three administrative districts (next to Kassel and Wiesbaden ), namely from the located in the American occupation zone rechtsrheinischen parts of the People's State of Hesse. It consisted of two spatially separated parts, between the city of Frankfurt am Main was the administrative district of Wiesbaden. The southern part of the former province Starkenburgring, included the cities of Darmstadt and Offenbach am Main as well as the counties of mountain road, Darmstadt, Dieburg, Erbach, wholesale Gerau and Offenbach. The northern part of the former province of Upper Hesse included the county-level city of Gießen and the districts Alsfeld, Büdingen, Friedberg, Giessen and Lauterbach.

In 1968, the district Wiesbaden was dissolved and its territory assigned to the Region of Darmstadt. Authority

The managing authority of the governmental district is the Darmstadt Regional Council.
