Darrell Ray Green ( * February 15, 1960 in Houston, Texas ) is an American former American football player at the position of the cornerbacks. He played for the Washington Redskins in the National Football League ( NFL). The 1.75 -meter Green was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Career

Green was already in his youth known for its speed: he could in each case the 100 meters in 10.08 seconds, running 200 meters in under 21 seconds and the 400 meters in under 46 seconds, qualified for the U.S. National Sprint Championships and was time competitor of the young Carl Lewis. At the small Texas A & I Green was both the Athletics and the football team, even though he was with his 1.75 meters as "too small" for this sport.

Nevertheless, he was selected in the 1983 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins on 28th, where he became an instant new strain cornerback in the team of Joe Gibbs and was also used as a return specialist. In the first game against the Dallas Cowboys Green succeeded to Tackling broken through and then in force as fastest man in the NFL Cowboy Tony Dorsett before end zone and thus to prevent a touchdown. Already in its second year, Green ( 109 tackles, five interceptions ) elected to the Pro Bowl, which he made in his career seven times. This year he made the Redskins the way into the Super Bowl XVIII, but they lost to the Los Angeles Raiders with 9:38.

In 1987, he won the Super Bowl XXII with Washington after he had scored in the NFC Championship Game against the Chicago Bears with broken ribs, a major punt return touchdown. He won the Super Bowl XXVI with Washington and was elected to the NFL 1990s All- Decade Team. Although he was already 37 years old at the time of his seventh Pro Bowls (1997), he was still considered one of the fastest players in the league. At the age of 42 years Green came from and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Private life

Green is married and has three children. His son Jared Green played wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers.
