Darwin Day

The Darwin Day is a global day of remembrance and is celebrated on 12 February, the birthday of Charles Darwin's celebrated annually.

The Darwin Day pays homage to Darwin's contribution to science. He is also generally closer to the public of Natural Sciences ( promote public education about science) and celebrate the natural sciences and humanity.

The first Darwin Day was celebrated on 22 April 1995 at the University of Stanford, as Donald Johanson, the discoverer of Lucy, delivered a lecture on Darwin and the origin of man. In subsequent years, the event was held on or about February 12, more universities followed with similar events.

The Darwin Day is celebrated mainly at universities as well as atheists ( as a countermovement to creationism ). The individual events are independently organized and can be listed on the website of Darwin Day Celebration. In 2007 there were 850 events for Darwin Day.
