DaÅŸoguz

Dasoguz (Russian Дашогуз / Dashoguz; old Russian name Ташауз / Taschaus ) is a town in Turkmenistan, it is capital of the province Dasoguz.

Geography

Dasoguz is located in the north of the country in the irrigation area of the lower Amu Darya, near the border with Uzbekistan.

Population

Dasoguz has around 200,000 inhabitants ( 2005).

History

The city was first mentioned in the 19th century. In 1924 Dasoguz received city rights.

Economy

Major industries of the city are the light and the food industry and electrical engineering. Nearby cotton is grown. Dasoguz has a regional airport. After Ashgabat, there is a road link through the Karakum through.
