Data-Link Connection Identifier

Data - link connection identifier ( DLCI) is a term used in network technology, specifically the Frame Relay technology. This is a packet -switched technology, which includes, but aspects of the circuit - switching network. This is accomplished by virtual channels, which constitute a route through the Frame Relay network. These channels are each assigned an identifier. To derive now a packet through the network, it is provided with a DLCI of the corresponding channel ID.

A frame relay switch consists of a number of inputs and outputs as well as a relatively simple table that assigns a pair of input and output and a pair of DLCI DLCI. Based on this information, the switch decides which package he continues to send where.
