Data remanence

Data remanence, (English data remanence ), means that data on storage media or electronic components are retained in different types of strength and possibly even after a deletion can be recovered.

To store the data on magnetic storage media ( for example, hard disk, magnetic tape, diskette ), the magnetic remanence BR is exploited: even after removal of the stylus, the data remains on the hard disk, since the particles retain their magnetic orientation. This remanence that is sometimes referred to in the data sheets of manufacturers / distributors as data remanence, is located at about 160 mT for Musikkasseten and tapes for video cameras at 500 mT.

Data remanence but also refers to the whereabouts of data on the medium after passing through unintentional ( eg heat, external magnetic field ) or intentional ( deleting files ) processes could have been deleted. The concept here is not limited to magnetic storage media, but also generally to electronic components in which configuration data to be retained when switching off the power supply.

Data remanence is often undesirable when it comes to that data should be deleted actually, but remain on the storage medium.
