Data Universal Numbering System

DUNS stands for Data Universal Numbering System, a system for the unique identification number of companies. Introduced in 1962 by Dun & Bradstreet ( D & B), it has now established itself as an international standard.

The nine-digit DUNS number code is issued by Dun & Bradstreet, and serves as an identification number for each in the database of D & B Company saved. The number combination is randomly generated and receives its meaning after the issue of the respective company.

This numerical code is used by the European Commission, the United Nations and the U.S. government, but also by the industry, such as the Association of the Automotive Industry.

The ninth digit of the number combination served until about the end of 2006 a check digit, which was formed after the Luhn algorithm to exclude invalid combinations of numbers can. In order to meet the increasing demand for DUNS numbers was, since no need to use this check digit.
