Database preservation

Database archiving referred to in the computer science methods to ensure a longer -term availability of the necessary data based on database systems.

This includes on the one hand simple backup / recovery procedures that are provided by most database management systems. On the other hand that includes an application-oriented database archiving.

An application- oriented database archiving this case has the following characteristic properties:

  • Logical data archiving granules: Based on the respective data model for the archived data sections can be selected individually.
  • User Reason: An archiving process can be event-driven or explicitly initiated by a user.
  • Data export: The operational data is physically separated from the archived data.
  • Archive access: Access to the archived data must be explicitly requested if required. The data is then returned to the original database.

Distinction between backup and archiving

The term database archiving does not include all the authors, the backup / recovery process .. When archiving is the objective against the backup completely different. While backing up a database, the short-term and rapid availability of current data is in the foreground, so the aim of the database archiving is the long-term and vendor-neutral storage of structured data. Another objective of the database archiving is a relief of the production database, which can only be achieved if the archived data is removed from the database. This makes the backup of the database is also relieved and required recovery time in case of errors can be more easily met.
