Datagram

A datagram is a generic term for:

  • A data frame
  • A data packet
  • One data segment

A datagram is a type of data unit and, in the OSI model layers 2-4 different labels. At the data link layer (layer 2) is called the local datagram data frame. At the network layer (layer 3), it is the data packet and at the Transport layer ( layer 4) of the data segment.

A datagram is different from a data unit in that a datagram with control information in the header and possibly provided with error- tested measures in the trailer is ( protocol element ). A data package can be seen to generally as each unit of data is transferred over networks, which are based on packet switching.
