Dave Burrell

Dave Burrell ( Herman Davis Burrell, born September 10, 1940 in Middletown, Ohio) is an American jazz pianist.

Burrell grew up in Hawaii, where he played in a rock and roll band. From 1958 to 1960 he studied at the University of Hawaii, then to 1965 at the Berklee School of Music, where he played with Tony Williams and Sam Rivers.

After completion of his studies he founded in New York City with saxophonist Byard Lancaster, bassist and drummer Bobby Kapp Sirone the Untraditional Jazz Improvisational Team. He also worked with Marion Brown and Pharoah Sanders ( 1966). In 1968, he was with Grachan Moncur III and Beaver Harris of the founders of the 360 Degree Music Experience, with whom he recorded but only in 1977. With these two musicians, he was also involved in Archie Shepp 1968 album The Way Ahead. In 1969 he participated in the Pan-African Festival in Algiers in part and stayed longer in Paris, where he played with Archie Shepp, Alan Silva, Sunny Murray, Lester Bowie, Jeanne Lee and Philly Joe Jones and recorded.

The late 1960s and early 1970s, Burrell worked regularly as a sideman for Shepp. In the late 1970s he composed the jazz opera Windward Passages. In the 1980s and 1990s he worked mainly for various instrumentations with David Murray; among others, emerged with his wife Monika Larsson as a singer recordings of pieces from his opera.
