Dave Jones (footballer born 1956)

David Robert " Dave" Jones ( born August 17, 1956 in Liverpool ) is an English former football player and current coach. Most recently, he coached the English second division club Sheffield Wednesday.

Career as a player

Dave Jones started his playing career at Everton in his hometown of Liverpool. Between 1975 and 1979 he played 86 league games for his team and in the 1976/77 season, scoring his only goal. In 1979 he joined for £ 275,000 to Coventry City, where he remained, however, due to an injury without major stakes. After an interim period in Hong Kong, where he was active for Seiko SA, he returned in 1981 to England and played the following two years for Preston North End.

Career as a coach

Stockport County

After several years as an assistant or youth coach, Dave Jones took over as coach in 1995 at Stockport County. In the season 1996/97 he led his club as second- behind the Bury FC in the second division. The higher class gambling Southampton FC became aware of him through this successful work at its first station manager and signed him for the upcoming season.

In the Premier League 1997/98 season, he finished at the end of twelfth grade, and thus a placement in mid-table. The following season in the Premier League 1998/99, the team spent a long time in relegation troubles, however, reached at the end of 17th place and thus avoid relegation. During the season 1999/2000 Dave Jones was released in January 2000 by his club, as he had to appear in court and threatened to suffer his activities as manager under.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

In January 2001, Jones signed his next contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers, who were active in the second division at the time. After just missing out on promotion in the 2001/ 02 Season 2002/ 03 promotion to the Premier League with a 3-0 victory succeeded in play-off final of the Sheffield United. The stay in the Premier League 2003 /04, however, was short-lived, it was followed by the direct re- descent and in the season 2004/ 05 even threatened the direct walkover into the third league. Dave Jones was subsequently released in late 2004 and replaced by Glenn Hoddle.

Cardiff City

In 2005, Dave Jones his fourth coaching job with the Welsh club Cardiff City. His new club was active in England's second league. In the following years, Jones was able to strengthen his team continuously and celebrated the climax in May 2008 by reaching the final of the FA Cup in 2007 /08. This lost his team but with 0:1 against FC Portsmouth. In the Football League Championship 2009/10 Cardiff reached the play-off final after they had finished fourth at the end of the season. However Cardiff again lost a final game, this time with 2:3 against FC Blackpool.

Also in the Football League Championship 2010/11 Cardiff City confident with consistently good performances and reached the play-off semi-finals. There, the team failed at Reading FC and missed for the third consecutive promotion to the Premier League. On 30 May 2011 the club announced the separation of Dave Jones.

Sheffield Wednesday

On 2 March 2012 Jones was unveiled as the new coach of third division club Sheffield Wednesday. With this he celebrated in the Football League One 2011/12 as a table runner promotion to the Football League Championship. The following year, the class was held successfully. After an unsuccessful first round 2013/14 Jones was released on 1 December 2013.
