Dave King (ice hockey)

W. David King ( born December 22, 1947 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey coach.

Coach

King coached from 1972 university and junior teams in the Western Hockey League. In 1982, he led the Canadian junior national team to the world title. From 1983 to 1992 he coached the Canadian Senior National Team and won her the 1987 Izvestia Cup and silver medals at the World Championships in 1989 and 1991 and at the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville. He then moved into the NHL and coached until 1995, the Calgary Flames. From 1997 to 1999 he was an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens before he was again from 2000 to 2003 at the Columbus Blue Jackets newly established primary responsibility.

Then King changed the first time in the German Hockey League, who played in his son Scott King, and until 2005 worked at the Hamburg Freezers. 2005/ 06 he trained HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Russian Super League and was able to win the 2005 Spengler Cup. For him, it was the third win after it was previously already succeeded twice with Team Canada. After a stint at the Swedish Malmö Redhawks King was from December 2007 back in Germany working for the Adler Mannheim in the DEL, where he replaced Greg Poss. On 28 February 2009, he was released from his coaching job. For the season 2009/10, King took over the post of assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes and acted as such until the end of the following season. He then belonged as a development coach at the expanded coaching staff of the Coyotes.

In February 2014 he became head coach at Lokomotiv Yaroslavl after Pyotr Vorobyov had resigned for health reasons.

Awards and achievements

Honors

Dave King was in 1992 awarded the Order of Canada. In 1997, he was inducted into the Canadian and 2001 in the IIHF Hall of Fame.

Publications

In autumn 2007, the book was published: written by Dave King and Eric Duhatschek "King of Russia A Year in the Russian Super League ." In the book, King describes his experience as a coach in the Russian Super League with Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
