Dave Liebman

David "Dave" Liebman ( born September 4, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York City ) is an American tenor and soprano saxophonist ( occasionally he also played flute and clarinet). He belongs " to the central saxophonist Coltrane -influenced modernity. "

Life and work

Liebman received from the age of nine piano lessons. From the age of twelve, he played tenor saxophone as a teenager and went several times to concerts by John Coltrane. Supported by Bob Moses, he gave his first concert at age fourteen. During the time in high school and studied music at Queens College, he was educated privately by Joe Allard, Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd. He studied American history at New York University he graduated from in 1968. Then he joined the New York loft scene out as an organizer and musician of Cooperative Free Life Communication. Since 1970 he has been professionally working as a musician, first in one of the early jazz-rock band Ten Wheel Drive, where he was the only woodwind and soprano saxophone had to play.

Then Liebman was for two years the band of Elvin Jones, Miles Davis took on ( On the Corner, Get Up with It ), before he toured worldwide with the group in 1973 and 1974 ( Dark Magus ), and Bob Moses in the Open Sky Trio played. By its first own group Lookout Farm (along with Richie Beirach, from the end of 1973 ), he was successful. In 1977 he toured with Chick Corea, before he founded a quintet ( with John Scofield ) and then again perform with Beirach. Since 1981, he led the group quest ( first with George Mraz and Al Foster, then to 1991 with Ron McClure and Billy Hart). In Europe, he has performed with numerous musicians such as Joachim Kühn, Daniel Humair, Paolo Fresu, Jon Christensen, Bobo Stenson, Harry Pepl, Michel Portal and Jean -Paul Celea as to how with the WDR Big Band Cologne, the Metropole Orkest and in the field of new Music Intercontemporain the ensemble and the sound Wien. He also wrote genre -border music for String Quartet.

Liebman wrote a number of textbooks, including Chromatic Approach To Jazz Harmony & Melody and Self Portrait Of A Jazz Artist. Under saxophonist especially his book The Personal Saxophone Sound ( "Developing a Personal Saxophone Sound" ) is considered, in which he describes the entire process of sound production on saxophone and exercises for breathing, the movement of the larynx, the tongue position when playing, the approach and the so-called harmonic exercises is received.

Prizes and awards

Liebman is performed almost continuously since 1973 as a leading soprano saxophonist in Kritikerpoll the downbeat. In 2011, he also led the Kritikerpoll the Jazz Times.

His album Homage to Coltrane was 1988, the Record of the Year of the French Académie du Jazz. 1997 Liebman was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, in 2000 elected him the International Association for Jazz Education in their Hall of Fame. In 2011 he was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship.
