Dave Pike

Samuel David "Dave" Pike ( born March 23, 1938 in Detroit ) is an American vibraphone player. He plays primarily jazz; some of his albums should be classified as lounge music.

Life and work

Pike learned from an early age is on the drums and vibraphone autodidact. In 1954 his family moved to Los Angeles, where he played with Curtis Counce, Harold Land, Elmo Hope, Dexter Gordon, Carl Perkins and Paul Bley. In 1960 he moved to New York and electrically amplified his vibraphone. Between 1961 and 1964 he toured with Herbie Mann and then played with Attila Zoller.

Since 1968 he has lived in Germany. Together with Volker Kriegel ( guitar, sitar ), J.-A. Save Bacher (bass, cello) and Peter Baumeister (drums, percussion ), he played from 1968 to 1972 as " Dave Pike Set". The last album the group Salamao, under the name "The New Dave Pike Set " with Eberhard Weber and Marc Hellman instead of Rettenbacher and builders together with the percussion group Grupo Baiafro De Bahia, to which the percussionist Djalma Corrêa, Edson Ernetério de Sant'Anna and Onias Camardelli were taken in Rio de Janeiro. The concept of " Dave Pike Set " was quite successful, as the boundaries of jazz rock and the " psychedelic " pop music have been exceeded. In addition, recordings Pikes originated with the renowned Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band.

In 1973, he returned to Los Angeles, where he played with musicians such as Ron Eschete. On the Jazzfest Berlin 2005 Pike occurred together with pianist Christoph Spendel, guitarist Michael Sagmeister, bassist André Nendza and drummer Kurt Billker as New Dave Pike Set.

Trivia

A wider public Pike was known by 1998 " Mathar " ( by Volker Kriegel ), a dance sitar piece in the movie 23 - Nothing is as it seems was played. Pike (at least on the vibraphone) not be heard in this recording of the Dave Pike Set.
