Dave Samuels

David "Dave" Samuels ( born September 10, 1948 in Waukegan, Illinois ) is an American jazz vibraphonist and marimba player.

Samuels began at age six with drums. He studied psychology at Boston University and then at the Berklee College of Music in Boston Music, inter alia, with Gary Burton ( he learned there Mallet percussion). Even in Boston, he played for example with Pat Metheny and John Scofield and began to teach. In 1974 he toured with Gerry Mulligan, with whom he also made his first recordings. In the 1970s, he also played with Frank Zappa, the groups " Timepiece " and "Double Image " ( 1977 to 1980, with vibraphonist David Friedman ). In 1979 he played with Spyro Gyra and in 1986 became a permanent member. He remained until the mid-1990s with the band and worked with the "Caribbean Jazz Project ," which he directs with the alto saxophonist and clarinetist Paquito D' Rivera and Andy Narell Steel drummer ( he plays there usually marimba ). Samuels also published from the 1980s albums under his own name.
