Davey Armstrong

David Lee Armstrong ( born June 9, 1955 in Tacoma, Washington, USA ) is a retired American boxer.

Career

David Lee Armstrong is known to the world only as a boxer Davey Armstrong. He began his career as a young boxer in 1966 at the Tacoma Boys Club, to which he remained faithful throughout his amateur career. The 1.75 m tall athlete punched in the left display (= normal display ).

In 1972 he made the first time attention to itself as 17- year-old, when he participated in the " National Golden Gloves" in Minneapolis and flyweight in the quarter -finals losing to Melvin Johnson. In the subsequent AAU Championships (U.S. Championship ), he started in the light flyweight, taking down with a victory over Claudio Rivera the U.S. Championship title. Then he won at the U.S. Olympic excretion ( Trials ) in Ft. Worth in the light flyweight Chris Flores, Claudio Rivera and Gary Griffin, thus securing the ticket to the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In the Olympic boxing tournament he won the light flyweight through Arif Dorgu from Turkey on points ( 4-1 ), but lost in the second round against Enrique Rodríguez, a naturalized Cubans in Spain, on points ( 0:5 ) and got away with it on the 9th Place.

1973 took Davey Armstrong at the AAU Championships in Bantamweight after one defeat in the final against Mike Hess 2nd place. In 1974 he won in two international comparisons against Graham Moughton from England & Kim Tai -ho from South Korea on points. Otherwise he joined in 1973 and 1974, not in appearance.

In 1975, he was then AAU champion at featherweight with an impressive points victory over the strong Ronnie Shields and in the U.S. excretion for the Pan American Games he succeeded featherweight even a points victory over the reigning world champion Howard Davis. Also at the Pan American Games in Mexico City, he was in great shape and secured with four wins the title. In the final he edged the Cubans Genoveo Griman on points.

Also in 1976, Davey Armstrong dominated the U.S. boxing scene amateur featherweight. He won first at the " National Golden Gloves " with a demolition victory id Round 2 in the final over David Toomer and then he won both the AAU Championships and in the Olympic Trials on Leonel Valencia on points. At the Olympics 1976 he defeated then with Anatoly Volkov from the USSR (5-0 ) and Tibor Badari from Hungary (5-0 ) two strong European boxer. In the quarterfinals, he met the high Favorites Angel Herrera from Cuba. In this perfectly balanced battle, two judges awarding points with 59:58 for Armstrong and two judges with 59:58 points for Herrera. The fifth judge gave a 59:59 with an auxiliary point in favor of Herrera, who thus became winner on points 3-2 judges' votes. For Davey Armstrong was only the 5th Place. He was disappointed by this performance so that he hung up his boxing gloves on the nail after these Olympics. He had previously denied 150 fights, of which he had lost 19.

1978 Davey Armstrong took a successful comeback, because he won at the " National Golden Gloves" at lightweight in the final over Melvin Paul, but this was defeated at the AAU Championships on points. For participation in the 1978 World Cup then Melvin Paul was nominated.

In 1979, he won again in the final battle of the AAU Championships. He suggested doing Robert Hines on points. In 1979 he also started to countries struggles against both German states. In Crystal Bay, he won the lightweight about Richard Nowakowski, GDR, on points and in Concord, he was defeated by Rene Weller from the FRG on points. In the U.S. elimination tournament for the Pan American Games he won the final battle over Johnny Bumphus on points and represented the United States in these games in San Juan (Puerto Rico). In San Juan he was defeated in the quarterfinals against Adolfo Horta of Cuba on points ( 0:5 ) and got away with it on the 5th Place. In 1979, he started also at the World Cup in New York. He took there with a points victory successful revenge on Rene Weller for defeat when countries fight but lost the final of this World Cup Viktor Demjanenko from the USSR on points.

In 1980 Davey Armstrong in a meet against Cuba again against Angel Herrera, but this was defeated this time clearly on points.

Professional career

His debut as a professional boxer was Davey Armstrong on March 28, 1980 in Tacoma. He won it on Gil Hernandez from Puerto Rico on points. During his career he played then a total of 27 fights, of which he won 24. There he did not succeed, to fight with wins over notable opponents in the world rankings to the front to major titles Fights ( World Championships ) to get. The only title he won in his professional career was that of the North American champion in the lightweight, which he won on June 9, 1983 in Toronto with a points victory after 12 rounds of the Canadian Nick Furlano. Even in his next fight he lost on July 22, 1983 in San Jose (California) vs. Steve Romero, USA, on points and quit the sport.

Davey Armstrong now resides (2009) with his family in Puyallup (Washington) and has been employed by the City Council of Seattle.
