David Bergen

David Bergen ( born January 14, 1957 in Port Edward, British Columbia, Canada ) is a Canadian writer. The in Winnipeg, Manitoba, living author has published six novels, a collection of short stories since 1993. The Matter with Morris, his most recent novel, which was published in 2010, was on the shortlist for the Giller Prize and the Scotiabank International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Life

David Bergen was born on 14 January 1957 in Port Edward, a small fishing village in British Columbia, and later grew up in a Mennonite town in Manitoba. He went to a Bible College in British Columbia and the Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he studied communications. He taught English and creative writing at Winnipeg's Kelvin High School until 2002.

Growing up as a Mennonite, noted mountains later that the tendency of the church questions and criticism to avoid, had reiterated his decision to turn to the writing of fictional literature. "Writing is a way of figuring things out. If you can not ask questions in Certain church, maybe you can ask them in fiction. " David Bergen can always incorporate experiences from his Mennonite background in his novels.

His debut novel, A Year of Lesser 1996, was conducted by the New York Times Notable Book and won the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award. His novel The Case of Lena S. was in the final round for the Governor General 's Award for English language fiction and won the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award. In addition, he was in the final round for the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award and the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction.

His novel The Time in Between won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, received excellent reviews at the Kirkus Review and was on the longlist of the IMPAC Award for 2007. 2008 he published his fifth novel, The Retreat, who was on the longlist of the Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction won. In 2010 he was again on the shortlist for the Giller Prize Scotiabank for his sixth novel, The Matter with Morris. He is also the author of a collection of short stories, Sitting Opposite My Brother (1993 ), a finalist at the Manitoba Book of the Year was.
