David C. Coates

David Courtney Coates ( born August 9, 1868 in Brandon, England; † January 28, 1933 in North Hollywood, California ) was an American politician. In the years 1901 and 1902 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Colorado.

Career

About the youth and education of David Coates nothing is handed down. He came to Colorado, where he worked as a private businessman. At the same time he became involved in the labor and trade union movement. He became secretary of the union 's Colorado State Federation of Labor. Politically he was first a member of the Democratic Party. Later he joined the Socialist Party of America. During World War II he left that party again in protest against their pacifist attitude. Then he joined the short-lived National Party.

In 1900, Coates was elected to the side of James Bradley Orman for Lieutenant Governor of Colorado. This post he held 1901-1902. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1901 he was involved on behalf of Governor Orman in successful negotiations to resolve an already escalated into violent rioting miners' strike.

Coates was also involved as a delegate to the founding meeting of the union Industrial Workers of the World. He was a friend of William Dudley Haywood. In 1910 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress.
