Life and work

Back in the 40s and 50s, he began to breed new and better roses to achieve roses. Quote: " ... I was aware that the highly developed Zuchtungsmethoden the previous years had certainly given us an amazing variety of roses, however, was obvious that presented two completely separate traditions in the old and modern roses .... That. both had their merits and that a connection between the two would be desirable .... The task was to select particularly beautiful and fragrant old roses and to cross it with Hybrid Teas and Floribundarosen because of their reliable remounting capacity and broad color spectrum. " (David Austin 's English Rosen, Cologne 1994 p 23).

He was inspired by it a copy of a book on Old Roses by George Bunyard and through the rose breeder and friend of his father, James Baker.

Despite many setbacks and hostility he succeeded in 1963 with ' Constance Spry ', the first breeding, which united these properties. In 1967 ' Chianti ' and 1968 ' Let Shropshire '. 1969 come ' Wife of Bath ' and ' Canterbury ' and Austin leads the name English Rose. In 1969 he also founded officially the rose-growing Austin. But only in 1983 with the two new Rose ' Graham Thomas ' and ' Mary Rose ' begins the Ruhmeszug the English Rose by England and the whole world.
