David Childs

David M. Childs ( born 1941 in Princeton (New Jersey) ) is a major American architect. Childs worked for the architectural firm Skidmore, and Merrill (SOM ) Owings in New York. Among other things, he developed the plans for the One World Trade Center in New York City at Ground Zero.

Curriculum vitae

Childs attended Yale College and the Yale School of Art and Architecture. In 1971 he went to Washington, DC to Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, one of the world's largest architectural firms. From 1975 to 1981 he was also a member of the "National Planning Commission " ( National Capital Planning Commission ). Privately, he is a member of the American Academy in Rome, the Museum of Modern Art, the Municipal Art Society, the New York City Partnership and the National Building Museum. He also belongs to the American Institute of Architects.

In 1984, Childs in the New York office of SOM, where he has since implemented a number of major projects ( see list). Internationally, he was, for example, involved in Tel Aviv, the Westferry Circus in London and the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa at Ben Gurion International Airport.

Currently, he is mainly involved in the construction of One World Trade Center, which will take the place of the World Trade Center in New York. In an internal power struggle he has clearly prevailed against Daniel Libeskind, which has found a wide international media coverage. Libeskind won with the original design for the redevelopment of the World Trade Center area an architectural competition. Childs has changed, designed by Libeskind building in its design has remained however preserving the overall concept of a memorial and several skyscrapers.
