David Dodge Boyden

David Dodge Boyden ( born December 10, 1910 in Westport ( Connecticut ), † 18 September 1986 Berkeley ( California)) was an American musicologist and instrument experts.

Life and work

David D. Boyden studied at Harvard University, where he presented his thesis with " magna cum laude" in 1938. He then continued his studies at Columbia University and the " Hartt School of Music " in Hartford, in 1957 honored him with an honorary doctorate.

From 1933 to 1935 he studied piano and viola in the 1940s. From 1939 to 1975 he taught and conducted research Boyden at the University of California, where he became a full professor in 1955 and was from 1955 to 1961 Dean of the Faculty of Music. As such, he was instrumental in establishing the Department of Musicology, but also in promoting the departments of ethnomusicology, composition and instrumental performance practice.

In addition to numerous visiting professorships and lectures, he was in the years 1954 to 1956 and from 1960 to 1962 vice- president of the " American Musicological Society ". About a scholarship from the Fulbright Program (1963 ) he was able to continue his research at Oxford University on the stringed instruments of the Hill Collection at the Ashmolean Museum. Three times awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship Boyden (1954, 1967 and 1970 ) to further his research on instruments. 1983 awarded him the " American Musical Instrument Society ," the " Curt Sachs Award".

His most important publication, "The History of Violin Playing from its Origins to 1761 " on the history of the violin and the performance practice, appeared in 1965. A German translation of "The history of violin playing from its origins to 1761 " published in 1971, a Polish translation followed in 1980. Among other published books and articles in professional journals, he has authored numerous articles for music encyclopedias Groves and MGG.
