David Dunn (Maine)

David Dunn ( born January 17, 1811 in Cornish, York County, Maine, † February 17, 1894 in Mechanic Falls, Androscoggin County, Maine ) was an American politician and 1844 Acting Governor of the State of Maine.

Career

David Dunn visited the community schools in his home state. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1833 and then opened a law practice in Poland Corner. Dunn decided in 1840 to pursue a career in politics when he successfully ran for a seat in the House of Representatives from Maine. He held this mandate for four years and spent the last two years as Speaker. On January 1, 1844 Governor Edward Kavanagh resigned from his post and Dunn, who served at the time as Speaker, then took over his official duties. He held this post only until January 3, 1844, when he resigned from his post as Speaker. Dunn returned to his work back in his law practice and withdrew for a short time from public life. He later received an appointment in 1857 as a clerk in the post office in Washington, DC, a position which he held until 1861.
