David Edward Cronin

David Edward Cronin ( born July 12, 1839 in Greenwich, New York, † June 9, 1925 in Philadelphia ) was an American painter, portraitist, illustrator and cartoonist.

Life and work

After studying art in Troy, New York at Alban Conant Cronin in 1855 went to New York City. The years from 1857, the period before the American Civil War, he spent in Europe. Presumably he spent about a year at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. In 1860 he returned back to the U.S., joined the Army and worked for Harper 's Weekly. He then worked as a journalist in Binghamton, as a lawyer in New York City and for a railroad company in Texas. End of the 1870s, he again went to New York City, where he illustrated books and from 1879 to 1903 worked as a political cartoonist. The last 35 years of his life he spent in Philadelphia.
