David Essex

David Essex ( born July 23, 1947 as David Albert Cook in London ) is a British singer and actor.

Life

Essex grew up in London's East End and played from 1963 as a drummer in a band called The Everons. Between 1963 and 1970 he published ten singles - since December 1964 under the name David Essex - who remained mostly without much success. Can not Nobody Love You was also placed on the turn of 1965/1966 in the Top Twenty of Radio London, Thigh High managed in September 1966 to 26th place in the capital charts.

In 1970 he tried his hand as an actor and had his first supporting role in Assault. His breakthrough came in 1971, when he prevailed in a casting against 600 competitors and in the musical Godspell got the role of Jesus. In the role as Jim MacLaine 1973 he played along with Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and Billy Fury in That'll Be the Day. For this film, Essex wrote the play Rock On, which climbed to number 3 in the UK and # 5 in the U.S. in the summer of 1973. He had the end of 1973 with the follow-up single Lamplight another top 10 hit in the UK.

In the fall of 1974 Essex had with I'm Gonna Make You a Star his first number 1 hit in the UK, followed by Stardust ( 7th place). That was the name, the second Jim MacLaine movie, played in the Essex together with Adam Faith, Keith Moon, Dave Edmunds and Larry Hagman. Rolling Stone came in the summer of 1975 at # 5 and Hold Me Close Essex had in the fall of 1975, another number 1 in the UK.

In 1978 he played the role of Che Guevara in Tim Rice / Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita. For this purpose, the single Oh What a Circus was (3rd place in the British charts ). In the same year he also participated in the album Jeff Wayne 's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds, and sang the role of " Artilleryman ". The value written by Tim Rice and Mike Batt song A Winter's Tale was published in 1982 and came to number 2 in the UK charts.
