David Friedman (percussionist)

David Friedman ( born March 10, 1944 in New York City, New York) is an American jazz vibraphonist and Marimbaphonist.

Career

Friedman studied in the 1950s and 1960s, drums and xylophone and attended the Juilliard School of Music. He also studied with Teddy Charles and Hall Overton. In the following period, he collected versatile musical experience of working with Leonard Bernstein, Luciano Berio, Bobby McFerrin, Wayne Shorter and Yoko Ono. He was heard in live performance and on plates with musicians such as Joe Henderson, Horace Silver, Johnny Griffin, Jane Ira Bloom, Ron Carter, Joe Chambers, Hubert Laws, Horacee Arnold, Dino Betti van der Noot and John Scofield.

Work

In 1975 he founded the The Mallet Duo, 1977, he was with Dave Samuels of the founders of the marimba - vibraphone quartet Double Image. The experienced with Geri Allen, Anthony Cox and Ronnie Burrage album Shades of Change (1982 ) was ranked by the magazine Downbeat among the twenty best CDs of the year. On the album ternaire of 1992, he was listening with Daniel Humair and Jean -François Jenny -Clark.

With the bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi and bassist Anthony Cox, he worked on a project about Astor Piazzolla's tango compositions. With Jean -Louis Matinier and Anthony Cox in 1996 he took the CD on Other Worlds. In addition, he also worked with the NDR Big Band and the musicians Jasper van't Hof and John Taylor. In 2003 he founded with Peter Weniger and Pepe Berns, the trio drummer whose Earfood CD was released in 2004.

In the 1970s, Friedman taught at the Manhattan School of Music and Montreux 's Institute for Advanced Musical Studies. Since 1989 he is professor for vibraphone and composition at the University of Arts in Berlin; Since 2005, Friedman taught at the newly founded there the Jazz Institute Berlin.
