David Friesen

David Friesen ( born May 6, 1942 in Tacoma, Washington) is an American jazz bassist.

Friesen began playing at the age of 10 years, ukulele and accordion at age 16, he learned guitar professionally. Only after his military service he spent partly in Europe, he found 1964 double bass. He first played in the local jazz scene of Seattle, where he played with through -trotting jazz musicians. Then he became a member of the band of John Handy. Then he played with Joe Henderson and 1975 with Billy Harper, with whom he visited Europe. 1977, he joined with Ted Curson at the Monterey Jazz Festival, and then to work with Ricky Ford, Duke Jordan, Sam Rivers, John Stowell and Paul Horn. Friesen toured and played a recording with many jazz greats, including Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Mal Waldron, Dizzy Gillespie, Jim Pepper, Denny Zeitlin, Paul McCandless and Glen Moore. In Germany he was and is to experience more frequent as a soloist and in a duo with guitarist Uwe Kropinski. He has also performed with the Music Ensemble of Benares.

Friesen is one of the bass players who are able to bind with a bass solo concert the audience. His play, however, is not characterized by extroversion; Friesen embodies rather the type of " introspective artist ." His sound is also due to the use of the Oregon bass, an electrically removed, self-designed instrument.

His discography currently includes 65 CDs on for about 100 recordings he can be heard as fellow musicians. In addition to his concerts Friesen is also active in jazz education. Actress Dyan Cannon is his sister.
