David Gaines (composer)

David Gaines ( b. 1961 ) is an American composer of contemporary classical music.

Life

David Gaines grew up in Stamford (Connecticut). He played euphonium and bass trombone in various bands and orchestras, for two years he was the first euphonium player of the Connecticut All-State band.

Study

Gaines studied at Northwestern University, the American University and the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated with a doctorate in composition. His teachers were M. William Karlins, Stephen Syverud, Jerzy Sapieyevski, Jean Eichelberger Ivey and Robert Sirota.

Extramusical activities

Gaines is considered as a pioneer of the artificial language Esperanto. It was 1994 Honorary Member of the Society and Esperanto Foundation in Bulgaria, 2006 he received the international organization Muzika Esperanto - Ligo the title of honorary president.

Work

His output includes two symphonies, concertos for euphonium, trombone and baritone saxophone, numerous pieces of chamber music for a variety of instruments and electronic music.
