David Gillingham

David R. Gillingham ( b. 1947 ) is an American composer and music educator.

Gillingham studied music education at the University of Wisconsin and music theory and composition at Michigan State University. He is Professor of Music at Michigan State University. Here he received the 1990 Excellence in Teaching Award and participated in the founding of an international center for new music.

Gillingham was famous as a composer of wind and percussion music. Many of his works are part of the standard repertoire. He received the 1981 DeMoulin Award for his Concerto for Bass Trombone and Wind Ensemble. In 1990 he won with Heroes, Lost and Fallen, the International Competition Barlowe Brigham Young University. Soloists like Fred Mills, Randall Hawes and Charles Vernon stood out as interpreters of his works.
