David Goloschekin

Dawid Goloshchekin Semenovich (Russian Давид Семёнович Голощёкин, English David Semyonovich Goloshchekin or Goloshokin David, born June 10, 1944 in Moscow ) is a Russian jazz musician and composer. The multi-instrumentalist plays as the main instrument violin, also saxophone, vibraphone, piano, bass, drums and flugelhorn.

Life and work

Dawid Goloshchekin began his musical career in the jazz scene of Leningrad; In 1962 there came to meetings with American musicians such as Phil Woods and Zoot Sims, the Soviet Union undertook a tour in the Benny Goodman Orchestra; Goloshekin recounts in the documentary Jazz for the Russians - To Russia with Jazz. From 1963, he led the ensemble Gonoschekina ( Ансамбль Голощёкина ), the Leningrad Jazz Ensemble was called from 1980. He worked in the 1960s with Gennady Golstein and Konstantin Nosow, 1966 /67, Moscow with Eddie Rosner and into the 1970s Oleg Lundstrem. He also played in his career with Monty Alexander, Benny Golson, Wynton Marsalis, Billy Taylor and Woody Shaw. In 1987 he was co-founder of the ensemble collage. He also composed film music and was honored as People's Artist of Russia in 1999. Currently ( 2011) he is head of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Jazz Ensemble.

He is head of the St. Petersburg Jazz Philharmonic Hall, which is considered a stronghold of mainstream and traditional jazz in the Soviet Union.
