David Hannay, Baron Hannay of Chiswick

David Hugh Alexander Hannay, Baron Hannay of Chiswick ( born September 28, 1935 in London ) is a British diplomat.

Life

Hannay was born in London and attended Winchester College and New College. In 1959 he started at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the UK representative in Tehran and Kabul. From 1965 until the 1970s he was involved as a representative of the British government in talks that eventually led to the entry of the United Kingdom into the European Economic Community ( EEC). In the 1970s and the 1980s, he held various offices in the Foreign Office in London. For the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. he worked from 1984 to 1985. Subsequently, he was appointed ambassador and represented the United Kingdom from 1985 to 1990 in the EEC. After that, he was from 1990 to 1995 representative to the United Nations.

1996 and 2003 he worked as ambassador to Cyprus. He was also one of the authors of the reform paper UN High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change, which was in December 2004, the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan presented.

From January 2006 to 2011, Hannay was chairman of the United Nations Association UK and is currently Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the UN. In addition, he is active in the nuclear disarmament group.

Awards

2001 Hannay was appointed Life Peer and received the title of Baron Hannay of Chiswick. He is also Vice- Chancellor of the University of Birmingham. Hannay is a member of the Order of St Michael and St George and the Order of the Companions of Honour ( 2003).
