David Harris (software developer)

David Harris ( born August 1961 in Dunedin, New Zealand) is a programmer and put the Internet community in 1990 with Pegasus Mail is one of the first non- commercial e -mail programs.

Since 1983, David Harris is a software developer and worked until 1993 full time at the University of Otago in Dunedin. Previously, he worked as a photographer. He lives today in Dunedin.

In 1989 he installed for the University of Otago an intranet, based on the server operating system Novell Netware. As more funds for a commercial mail system were missing, he developed the E -mail server Mercury and the e- mail program Pegasus Mail. These programs he made in subsequent years available worldwide as freeware from the FTP server.

The development work on its e-mail system were so extensive that in 1993 he gave up his job at the university and very dedicated software development. Since Pegasus Mail and Mercury continue to be made available free of charge, since he earned his living by selling manuals and support contracts as well as memorabilia and donations. Anchored mainly by the free and the operating system or the browser suite mail programs from Microsoft and the Mozilla project and the declining circulation of Novell Netware over Exchange servers based on Microsoft server operating systems declined since the late 1990s, the market share of its software greatly so that the financial basis for the programs and thus their development is constantly at risk. The end of 2006 he hired the sale of manuals and support contracts, trying to June 2009, to finance his living, and thus the development of the software through the sale of Mercury licenses. Since June 2009 he is looking for a way for a constant annual funding for his work.

On November 15, 2002, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the PC World Awards in Auckland. From 2003-2006, he was involved in the New Zealand organization InternetNZ as elected body member.
