David Jerome

David Howell Jerome ( born November 17 1829 in Detroit, Michigan, † April 23, 1896 in Saginaw, Michigan ) was an American politician and from 1881 to 1883 the 18th Governor of Michigan.

Early years

David Jerome attended St. Clair Academy in Michigan. After he earned his living in different areas. Among other things, he was rafters. During the American Civil War, Jerome was an avid supporter of the North. In 1862, he helped in the establishment of an infantry regiment from Michigan.

Political rise

Between 1862 and 1868 Jerome was a member of the Republican Party in the state Senate from Michigan. Between 1865 and 1866 he was a military advisor to Governor Henry Crapo. From 1865 to 1873 Jerome was a member of the Military Committee ( State Military Board) of Michigan. In 1873 he was member of a commission to revise the state constitution of Michigan. Between 1876 and 1881 Jerome was a member of the Indian Committee ( Board of Indian Commissioners ) of the federal government. On November 2, 1880, he was elected as a candidate of the Republican Party as the new governor of Michigan.

Governor of Michigan

Jerome took up his new post on 1 January 1881. During this time, a school for the blind was opened in Michigan. The railway network in Michigan has been extended and another hospital for the mentally disabled was opened. In 1882, Jerome applied unsuccessfully for re-election. Therefore, he had to give up his post on 1 January 1883.

Further CV

In 1889, Jerome member of the so-called Cherokeekommission was acquired by the Indians the land on which then gave rise to the Oklahoma Terrtitorium. Then he withdrew into retirement. The married Lucy Peck David Jerome died in 1896.
