David Lam

David See- Chai Lam, OC, CVO, OBC (Ch林思齐; born September 2, 1923 in Hong Kong, † November 22, 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia) was a Canadian politician and businessman. From 1988 to 1995 he was Vice- Governor of the Province of British Columbia.

Biography

Lam, the grandson of a Baptist preacher, graduated from Lingnan University in Hong Kong and at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he graduated with an MBA. Subsequently, he worked in Hong Kong Finance. In 1967 he emigrated with his family to Canada and received five years later, the Canadian citizenship. Lam was a successful real estate broker and founded an investment company. In 1982 he retired from business life and founded a charitable foundation. He donated millions of dollars for social purposes and promoting education.

For his charitable contributions Lam received an honorary doctorate from the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Baylor University, the Royal Military Academy, the Eastern College and the Hong Kong Baptist College. Governor General Jeanne Sauvé sworn him on September 9, 1988 as Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. This representative office he held until April 21, 1995. Lam was the first person of Asian descent who became a viceregal position in Canada.
