David Lean

Sir David Lean KBE (born 25 March 1908 in Croydon, † April 16, 1991 in London) was a British film director. He became famous mainly through: screen like Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Life

His first experience with the film business, he gained as a simple clapperboard assistant. Around 1930 he worked as an editor for newsreels and went as an editor in touch with the director of activity later. His collaboration with movies began with Escape Me Never ( 1936), and his first work as a film director, he delivered as a joint work with Noel Coward: In Which We Serve ( 1942). His own style, he found associated with encounter (1945 ) and then has directed several films such as Great Expectations (1946 ) and Oliver Twist ( 1948) on the classic Charles Dickens novels were based. With these two films, his many years of highly fruitful collaboration with Alec Guinness, who played in almost all Lean films began.

The film The Sound Barrier (1952 ) demonstrates British imperturbability, and produced by Lean master of the house I am ( 1954) is a stylized version of King Lear, located in Victorian Manchester.

With the advent of color film Lean became famous. Success as a director of films such as The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957 ), for which he received an Academy Award Another he won for Lawrence of Arabia. Also a very big success was Doctor Zhivago (1965). But after Ryan's daughter was only moderately successful in 1970, he led again until 1984 trip to India direct a movie. This film was his last work, while providing a worthy conclusion of his work dar. He died while preparing a filmic adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Nostromo.
