David M. Potts (Geotechnics)

David Malcolm Potts ( born April 26, 1952) is a British civil engineer ( geotechnical ).

Career

Potts studied civil engineering at King's College London ( bachelor's degree ) and was at the University of Cambridge in soil mechanics doctorate (Ph. D. ). He also received a D.Sc. in soil mechanics at Imperial College London. After his PhD, he conducted research at Cambridge and then to offshore problems at the Shell Research Laboratories in the Netherlands.

Since 1979 he teaches at Imperial College London. Potts is professor of computational methods in soil mechanics (Analytical Soil Mechanics ) at Imperial College London, Head of Soil Mechanics and Deputy Head of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is Director of GCG Computing Limited. in the Geotechnical Consulting Group ( GCG).

He is known for numerical modeling in geotechnical engineering. From him the Imperial College Finite Element Program ( ICFEP ) comes.

In 2002, he held the Rankine Lecture ( Numerical analysis: a virtual dream or practical reality? ). He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
