David Munrow

David Munrow ( born August 12, 1942 in Birmingham, † May 15 1976 in Chesham Bois ) was an English musician, composer and musicologist.

Life and work

Munrow was born in Birmingham, the son of a high school teacher. In 1960 he spent some time in Peru, from where he brought Bolivian flutes and other instruments to England. During his studies at Cambridge, he went through a friend acquaintance with a curved horn. Based on his experience as a singer, pianist and bassoonist, he learned many other ancient instruments, including Cornamuse, Kortholt, Pommer, rankett, Rauschpfeife and shawm. A special significance had the game on the recorder for him.

In 1967 he became a teacher at the University of Leicester. His interpretations were documented on numerous recordings as well as by radio and television recordings.

In 1976 he retired from suicide from the life. In 1977, he was posthumously awarded the Grammy for "Best Chamber Music Performance".
