David N. Payne

David Neil Payne ( born August 13, 1944 in Lewes, Sussex, England ) is a British physicist.

Life and work

Payne was born the son of Raymond and Maisie Payne. From 1962 he worked as a Commissioning Engineer at English Electric Co. He then studied physics at the University of Southampton, where he in 1967 his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and in the following year his master made ​​in quantum electronics. Then he was there research assistant and then a researcher and lecturer in Southampton. In 1976 he received his doctorate with the work on waveguides. In 1981, he founded the company York Technology Ltd.. with and for ten years was its director. He was deputy director of the Optoelectronic Research Centre Southampton, its director from 1995 1989. Since 1991 he is also professor of photonics. In 2000, he founded the company with Southampton Photonics Inc. and has been its director.

1987 Payne invented the erbium -doped fiber amplifier ( EDFA), which has the optical transmission of large amounts of data much faster. This eventually enabled the rapid development and wide diffusion of the Internet in the 1990s. Payne works also on the design and the manufacture of optical fibers and sensors.
