David Newman (filmmaker)

David Newman ( born February 4, 1937 in New York City; † June 26, 2003 ) was an American editor, screenwriter and film producer.

Life

David Newman studied at the University of Michigan, where he made his degree in 1958. Together with Robert Benton, he started working then as an editor for the magazine Esquire. His colleague persuaded him even to get started in the film business. His very first script for Bonnie and Clyde (1967 ) earned him an Academy Award nomination. He then co-authored with Benton screenplays for such films as What's Up, Doc? (1972 ), Bad Company (1972) and In the Still of the Night (1982). He was also involved in the first three Superman movies. As a film producer, he produced Who Rides a Tiger ( 1965) and ROTOR - The killing machine (1989).

He also wrote screenplays for Broadway muscials and revues like Oh! Calcutta! . As the author of the musical The Life, along with Ira Gasman and Cy Coleman 1997, he received a Tony nomination.

Newman died in 2003 of a stroke.
