David O. McKay

David Oman McKay ( born September 8, 1873 in Huntsville, Utah, † January 18, 1970 in Salt Lake City, Utah ) was the ninth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints.

He was born on September 8, 1873, the son of David McKay and Jennette Evans McKay. In 1893 he was at the age of 19 years teacher and headmaster of the primary school Huntsville. He studied from 1894 to 1897 at the University of Utah. Afterwards he served a mission to Great Britain for two years. He was also employed as a manager for all the missionaries in Scotland. He married on January 2, 1901 Emma Ray Riggs in the Salt Lake Temple.

In 1902 he was appointed director of the Weber Stake Academy, where he has taught in 1899 and 1900, was appointed. In 1906 he was ordained by Joseph F. Smith to be an apostle. In 1918 he was appointed general superintendent of the Deseret Sunday School Union. From 1919 to 1921 he was Superintendent of Schools of the Church. He was 1922-1924 president of the European Mission. He served as a counselor in the First Presidency of the Church from 1934 under President Heber J. Grant and since 1945 by President George Albert Smith.

On April 9, 1951, he joined the succession of George Albert Smith as ninth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints. He initiated in 1955 the Bern temple, the 1956 Los Angeles California Temple, 1958 the Hamilton - Temple in New Zealand and the London Temple and 1964 the Oakland California Temple. During his presidency of Latter -day Saints, the membership of the Church of Jesus Christ rose from around one million to three million.
