David Packard

David Packard ( born September 7, 1912 in Pueblo, Colorado; † 26 March 1996 in Stanford, California ) was an American entrepreneur. He founded along with Bill Hewlett technology company Hewlett -Packard.

Biography

After earning a Bachelor's degree at Stanford University Packard worked until 1938 for General Electric and then returned to Stanford University, where he received the Electrical Engineering (Master) in the area. In 1939 he and Bill Hewlett founded with 538 U.S. dollars seed capital in a garage their company. The company, in the Packard distinguished himself as an administrative professional and Hewlett contributed many technical innovations that grew the world's largest manufacturer of electronic test and measurement instruments. In addition, the company became one of the major manufacturers of calculators, personal computers, laser and inkjet printers.

Packard was 1947-1964 President of Hewlett -Packard from 1964 to 1968 and its CEO. From 1964 to 1968, from 1972 to 1993 he was Chairman of the Executive Committee.

He was appointed by U.S. President Richard Nixon to the Deputy Secretary of Defense ( Deputy Secretary of Defense ) under Melvin R. Laird in 1968. Packard entered this office on 24 January 1969 and held it until 13 December 1971, then returned to Hewlett -Packard.

1964 he and his wife founded the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. 1984 could be built due to a donation from the Packard Monterey Bay Aquarium, 1987, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. In 1995 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lemelson -MIT Prize.

His son David W. Packard is also active as a patron.
