David Pate

David Pate ( born April 16, 1962 in Los Angeles, California ) is a former American professional tennis player. In 1991, he led the world tennis rankings in doubles.

Life

Pate graduated from Texas Christian University and won in 1981 along with Carl judge the double title of the NCAA. In 1983 he became a professional tennis player and was able to win his first individual title on the ATP World Tour already in the following year in Tokyo. In 1987 he won in Los Angeles in the final against Stefan Edberg his second and last single tournament.

In doubles, he was incomparably more successful 1984-1993 he won 18 doubles titles, and another 18 times he stood in a final. Its highest listing in the tennis world ranking he reached in 1987 with position 18 in the singles and in 1992 with position one in doubles.

In individual he never came out at Grand Slam tournaments on the third round. On the side of Scott Davis, he won the 1991 Australian Open, the finals they defeated Patrick McEnroe and David Wheaton in four sets. In the same year he was back with Davis, in the final of the U.S. Open. There, however, they lost John Fitzgerald and Anders Järryd. At the French Open and Wimbledon, he reached the quarter -finals as the best result.

Pate was appointed in a 3-2 semi-final win against Germany in 1991 a single time in the U.S. Davis Cup team. Although he had led this year's double world ranking, he was no longer considered after his defeat at the side of Scott Davis vs. Eric Jelen and Michael Stich.
