David Pohle

David Pohle (* 1624 in Marienberg, † December 20, 1695 in Merseburg, also Pohl, Pohlen, poles, pole or plank written surname ) was a German composer of the Baroque.

Life and work

Pohle came from a family of city pipers. With his brother Samuel Pohle he came as an instrumentalist in the chapel of Duke Christian of Saxe- Merseburg. From 1650 to 1652 he is documented in Kassel. As of 1653 it is at Gottorfer farm in Schleswig. In a baptismal record from the year 1660, he is known as " the Prince Magdeburgischer Concert Master ." By no later than 1661, he has been active as a " Princely Kapellmeister " at the court of Duke August of Halle- Weissenfels. From 1674 to 1677 he also worked on the farms in Sekundogenitur - Weissenfels and Zeitz. From 1678 to 1682 he was Kapellmeister in Zeitz. From 1682 until his death in 1695 he was then Kapellmeister in Merseburg.

The earliest surviving compositions from his pen are strophic songs to Paul Fleming's odes, which he has dedicated 1650 to the Landgrave of Hesse- Kassel. In his sacred vocal works, the influence of Heinrich Schütz is noticeable. Between 1663 and 1664 he wrote cantatas for the entire church year. Here each goes a biblical verse with a strophic aria, whose lyrics odes of David Elias Heidenreich come. For this cycle, only one of his works has been preserved: " Behold, it has overcome the Lion". As a link between Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach vocal works Pohle granted insight into the development of the Protestant church cantata.

In the instrumental music he experimented, with a preference for the middle and lower tones of voice, especially with the form. Despite modest scope of work has its own style is recognizable.

Not a single one of his works was published during his lifetime. Many of his compositions are lost.

Works

Complete Works of Pohle have survived only in manuscript form, and much is lost. Some works have been partially transferred only in recent years.
