David Prain

Sir David Prain ( born July 11, 1857 in Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, † March 16, 1944 in Whyteleafe, Surrey ) was a Scottish botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Prain ".

Prain studied at the University of Aberdeen. He was from 1887 to 1889 curator of the herbarium of Calcutta. From 1905 to 1922 he was director of the Botanical Gardens at Kew. In 1935, he received the Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London awarded.

Prain was editor of volumes 133-146 of Curtis 's Botanical Magazine ( 1907-1920 ) and the volumes 28 to 30 from Icones Plantarum Hooker ( 1905-1994 ). The volumes 6 ( 2) and 9 of the Flora of Tropical Africa by Daniel Oliver, he published. For this work he edited the parts " Euphorbiaceae " ( in Volume 6 ( 1), together with Nicholas Edward Brown and John Hutchinson ) and " Cycadaceae " ( in Volume 6 ( 2) ).

The plant genus Prainea King ex Hook. f has been named after him.
