David Rizzio

David Rizzio, David Riccio (* 1533, † March 9, 1566 in Edinburgh, Scotland), was an Italian musician and private secretary and favorite of Mary Stuart.

David Rizzio came in 1561 with the Ambassador of Savoy to Scotland. There he entered the service of Mary Stuart. 1564, he was its secretary for French affairs. The trust that brought him Mary Stuart, produced jealousy and hatred on the part of many nobles. This was reinforced by the Catholic faith Rizzio, which faced the predominantly Protestant lords opposed. They persuaded Lord Darnley, Mary's husband, that Rizzio was Mary's lover. On March 9, 1566 a group penetrated nobleman in the Castle of Holyrood, with the support of Lord Darnley, in the apartments of Mary Stuart and Rizzio killed before the eyes of the queen.

There is no evidence for the claim that he was the lover of Mary Stuart. What seems certain is that his murder was merely part of a larger campaign by Scottish nobles against the Queen, who feared that Mary Stuart with the help of her French family ( the Dukes of Guise ) Scotland traced back to the Catholic faith wanted.
