David Rose

David Rose (born 15 June 1910 in London, † August 23, 1990 in Burbank ) was born in England, American songwriter, composer and arranger. Among his most famous compositions include The Stripper ( 1958), Holiday for Strings and Calypso Melody. Rose wrote and arranged the background music in numerous television series, including Bonanza, Little House and underwater adventure.

Life and work

David Rose was born in 1910 to Jewish parents in London and later grew up in the American metropolis Chicago. He studied music there, then worked for the Chicago Orchestra, radio stations and went to Hollywood as an arranger and composer. Early forties, he founded his own orchestra and in 1944 with the title Holiday For Strings, which reached # 2 in the U.S., a great success. Although he scored in the period following minor hits, but his success of 1944 he was able to repeat until 1962, when The Stripper arrived in the U.S. singles chart at No. 1 and stayed 11 weeks in the Top Twenty.

David Rose composed the film music for many Hollywood movies such as: 1944 The corsair ( The Princess and the Pirate ) with Bob Hope; 1959 Operation Petticoat ( Operation Petticoat ) with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis, Championship Affair ( Please Do not Eat the Daisies ) with Doris Day and David Niven, and in 1967 for the Western He was called Hombre ( Hombre ) with Paul Newman in the lead role.

Furthermore, Rose composed the music for numerous TV series. Among other things, for the Western series Bonanza with Lorne Greene, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon and Pernell Roberts for which he also wrote the theme song. The television series had 430 episodes and ran from 1959 to 1973. This led to a lifelong friendship between Landon and David Rose. Then he composed the music for Michael Landon's television series Little House ( Little House on the Prairie) which brought it to 187 episodes between 1974-1983. Rose produced the soundtrack for the series. His song " Do you love me? " was used in the series and over again. And from 1984 he wrote the music for the TV series Highway to Heaven one aired between 1984-1989 111 episodes long.

On October 8, 1938, he married actress Martha Raye, but the couple could be divorced after only three years. Rose married shortly afterwards a second time, this time the actress and singer Judy Garland. The couple had no children, and this marriage also failed 1945. With his third wife, Betty Bartholomew, Rose later had two daughters.

He died at the age of 80 years in Burbank, California, and was interred in the Hollywood Hills at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery.

For his musical work, he received two Academy Award nominations next twelve awards in the entertainment industry, including several Emmy Awards for his series soundtracks.
