David Russell (bishop)

David Patrick Hamilton Russell ( born November 6, 1938) is a former South African Anglican bishop and anti- apartheid activist.

Life

Russell studied at the University of Cape Town, where he received a bachelor's and then at the University of Oxford. After his master's degree there followed a priestly formation at the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield and a doctorate in religious studies with a focus on Christian ethics in Cape Town. In 1965 he was ordained and Kaplan.

1977 Russell was made because of his work for immigrants for five years under house arrest. After he had in 1980, opposes house arrest and attended an Anglican Synod, he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and suspended for two and a half years of his office. His prison time he should spend in Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town, due to an appeal request of his lawyer, but he was released on bail. 1986/87 he was a suffragan bishop, 1987 he was at the 12th Bishop of Grahamstown, 1986-2004 member of the Episcopal Conference of South Africa. In 2000 he was elected Dean of the Ecclesiastical Province of South Africa. Since his retirement in 2004, Russell has worked in a Christian NGO.

Russell is married and has two sons.

Awards

Russell 2011 received by President Jacob Zuma to the Order of the Baobab in Silver.
