David Shifrin

David Shifrin ( born January 2, 1950 in New York City ) is an American clarinetist and music educator.

Shifrin attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York and studied from 1965 to 1967 at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and until 1973 at the Curtis Institute. After that, he was a clarinetist in several well-known American orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He became a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, whose artistic director he was from 1993 to 2004 in 1989.

As a soloist played Shifrin recordings for Delos, DGG, Angel / EMI, Arabesque, BMG, SONY, and CRI one, some of which were nominated for a Grammy, including the collection of chamber music by Claude Debussy with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Clarinet Concerto by Aaron Copland and Maurice Ravel's Introduction and Allegro ( with Nancy Allen, Ransom Wilson and the Tokyo String Quartet ). In addition, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant ( 1987) awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Notably Shifrin dedicated to the compositions of American composers, the 20th and 21st centuries, including John Adams, Joan Tower, Stephen Albert, Bruce Adolphe, Ezra Laderman, Lalo Schifrin, David Schiff, John Corigliano, Bright Sheng and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

As a clarinet teacher had Shifrin at the University of Hawaii, the Cleveland Institute of Music ( 1974-76 ), the University of Michigan ( to 1982 ), the University of Southern California and the Juilliard School of Music. Since 1987 he is a professor at Yale University and artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Yale.
