David Simon, Baron Simon of Highbury

David Alec Gwyn Simon, Baron Simon of Highbury CBE ( born July 24, 1939) is a British businessman, Labour Party politician and peer ( needle) for life.

Life and career

Simon was born on 24 June 1939. He graduated in 1961 from the University of Cambridge and started working for British Petroleum, as a management trainee in 1982 and Chief Executive of BP Oil International. In 1986 he became managing director of BP in 1986, chief executive of BP in 1992 and Chairman 1995 to 1997.

He studied at Insead, then he became a consultant at Unilever and was 2004 Chairman of the Belgo - British Conference.

Simon was for many years engaged in business. From 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the Court of the Bank of England. He was from 1989 to 1996 Non-Executive Director of Grand Metropolitan plc and from 1995 to 1997 by the The RTZ Corporation plc, as well as by the CRA Ltd from 1995 to 1997. From 2006 to 2009 he was Deputy Chairman of Unilever from 2000 to 2009 Chairman of the Board.

Since 2000 he is a Senior Adviser at Morgan Stanley. From 1991 to 1997 he was a member of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bank. From 1996 to 1997, he joined the Supervisory Board of Allianz AG on. From 2000 to 2008 he was a member of the International Council and UK Advisory Board of Insead. From 2000 to 2005 he belonged to the Fortis 's board of LEK Consulting, and from 2001 to 2004.

Since 2001 he is member of the Supervisory Board of Suez Group. From 2001 to 2006 he was a member of the Fitch International Advisory Committee. He was a member from 2002 to 2006 the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG. Since 2006 he is member of the International Advisory Board of Dana Gas.

From 1999 to 2003 he was adviser to Prime Minister Tony Blair to modernize the government. Simon is the Centre for European Reform member since 1996. 1999 and 2003 he was a member of the Advisory Group on Reform of the EU. Since 2002 he is member of the Centre for European Policy Studies.

From 2000 to 2005 he was chairman of the Cambridge University Foundation. Since 2005 he is member of the board of the University of Cambridge. From 2001 to 2010 he was a member of the Trusteeship Council of the Hertie Foundation, as well as in the same period at the Cicely Saunders International. He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers and the Worshipful Company of Carmen.

From 1988 to 1992 and from 1994 to 1995 he was a member of the Sports Council. From 1992 to 1997 he was a member of the President's Committee of the CBI.

Currently, Simon consultants KPMG and Montrose Associates. At the Institute of Government, he is member of the Trusteeship Council. Simon is a member of the Trusteeship Council and Vice Chairman of Cambridge University Council.

Simon was a member of the European Union Competitive Advisory Group from 1995 to 1997 and advisor to the European Commission presidents of 1999 to 2000.

Membership in the House of Lords

Simon was appointed Peer (nobility ) to life as Baron Simon of Highbury, Canonbury in the London Borough of Islington on the 16th of May 1997. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 22 May 1997.

Simon's presence at meeting days lay in his first session in the middle area, fell in the following years, but considerably in the small two -, later -digit range. From 2005 to 2008, and since 23 July 2010, he is on leave of absence granted by the House of Lords Leave of Absence.

Honors

Simon 1991 Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1995 he was appointed a Knight Bachelor.
