David Steel

David Martin Scott Steel, Baron Steel of Aikwood, KT, KBE, PC ( born March 31, 1938 in Kirkcaldy ) is a British politician and served as Chairman of the Liberal Party by 1976 until 1988. Between 1999 and 2003 he was also Chairman of the Scottish Parliament.

Life

Steel visited in Scotland, George Watson 's College in Edinburgh, and in Kenya the Prince of Wales School in Nairobi. He then studied at the University of Edinburgh Law and worked for the Scottish Liberal Party and the BBC. In 1965 he was elected to the House of Commons as the youngest Member of Parliament. He held this seat until 1983, when he was elected for Tweeddale Ettrick and Lauderdale as a deputy in the European Parliament.

He was with Robert Maclennan, formerly head of the SDP, in the transition phase of the merger with the Liberals chairman of the new party, which still bore the name of Social and Liberal Democrats at this time; later, from the Liberal Democrats.
